Pumphouse Groove, May 20-22, 2022
Conceived and directed by Kyle Syverson and Miki Mappin, lighting by Miki Mappin. A weekend of scored ensemble improvisation performances developing KSAMB’s creative relationship with two free jazz musicians, Lloyd Tomczak (bass) and Gregory Edmunds (saxophone, flute, and clarinet)--INSIDE the historic Pumphouse at River Landing. These will be relaxed, open-door performances, in the round, using the existing architecture. The history of the site, a relic of the era of coal-fired electricity, resonates with our program of post-capitalist joy, as we envision new life in the ruins of capitalism.
3-45 minute shows, May 20, 21 and 22.
Dancers: Annika Lessing, Haleh Mirmiri, Karla Kloeble, Kyle Syverson, Laura Harris, Lauren Scruton, Miki Mappin. Bios can be found here: http://www.ksamb.com/dancers.html
Musicians:
Lloyd Tomczak plays bass in diverse musical contexts; from reggae, blues, jazz to jazz/rock fusion. As an instrumentalist, sideman and soloist, he steps into creative interaction with fellow collaborators-‘thinking on your feet’-with aplomb. He performs at the Sasktel Jazz Festival, the Bassment, and other venues, and recordings with the Efuze and Joel Grundahl jazz fusion projects.
Gregory Edmunds, originally from Pittsburgh, is an eclectic musician, doing session work, performance, musical workshop & clinic consulting. He plays clarinet, flute, alto & tenor sax, keyboards, and produces. His musical experience started at age 5, performing Do-wop, rhythm blues and soul with the child vocal group “the Soul Dimensions.” He studied at the US School of Music-Naval Academy in Virginia, which boasts John Coltrane, Doc Severinson, and Grover Washington as alumna.
