The 2021 Optimist Park Dance OUTside summer program!
Picture
Conceived and directed by Kyle Syverson and Miki Mappin. Activities ran from June 27 until September 3, 2021. Saturday, July 10 was the OPTIMIST Dance OUTside PARADE. We took to the street with music, stiltwalkers, a unicorn, and a horse! We danced with the neighbourhood, and the Rhythm Agogo drum group. The Guadalupe Elders shared a smudge and prayers for our summer of dancing in the park.

The Movement Performance Program was for all ages and abilities, practising dance improvisation skills and culminating in a performance. Two guest teachers were invited, Lawrence Roy with Grass Dance and Hoop Dance, and Mike Mirlin with Contemporary Hip-Hop. We worked with musicians Lloyd Tomczak, on electric bass and Gregory Edmunds on winds in two rehearsals and the performance. Participants of the program and performance received a performance fee.
The final performance – UNFOLDING was held on the evening of September 2, at River Landing.

Other weekly activities included the
Dance Film Night, Beginner Contemporary Dance, Adult Ballet and Not Church Just Dance

Wednesday, July 28, Movement Performance Program featured a visit by hoop-dancer Lawrence Roy. We tried some moves inspired by Grass Dance and Hoop Dance. We learned about balance, lifting our spirits, the circle, and our connections to nature. Many thanks for Lawrence's kindness and enthusiasm!

THANKS TO:
The City of Saskatoon and Sask Lotteries for financial support.
Chokecherry Studios, Ranch Ehrlo, White Buffalo Youth Lodge, CNYC and The Lighthouse for their collaboration.
All the participants who, for one reason or another, were not able to continue until the final performance.
The Elders of Guadelupe Parish for their prayers.
