Be Lonely, by KSAMB Dance Company
In response to pandemic restrictions, a poet and a small company of dance improvisers, aged 28 to 64, move their work outdoors in freezing temperatures. Maintaining physical distancing and respecting the permitted size of gatherings, they perform in City Hall Square, on the theme of social isolation.
As Covid news spread and restrictions became increasingly strident, KSAMB Dance Company thought, WE MUST KEEP DANCING! Studios closed, gatherings limited, social distancing in effect, we bought a powerful battery-powered speaker and took the dancing outdoors.
Along with our regular community dance jams, we also took our practise of scored movement improvisation outside. With our core group of improvisers, one of whom is poet, Laura Edna Lacey, we created a short video.
The video shows us improvising to Laura’s original poem, “Be Lonely”. It was shot over two sessions, April 3rd and 10th, just as pandemic precautions were reaching their height in Saskatchewan. April 3rd, the temperature dipped to -20c.
KSAMB Dance Company is predicated around engagement, with one’s own body and sensation, with the earth beneath and around us, and of course, with other people and our communities. Our dance company believes in joyful expression, be it resistance, inspiration, or questioning.
Be Lonely? Yes, as a vital part of the human condition. Also, perhaps as part of the pandemic isolation measures. But most importantly: be engaged, be resilient!
We are a company that believes that keeping things simple can make them happen. We feel elitism inhibits engagement. This work is fresh, and honest. It highlights the grassroots spirit that is needed to create a better world. It is do-it-yourself. We say to our audience, you can do it too!
